Enabling Ancient Language Braille Tables

Please refer to the instructions below if you are uncertain how to use braille tables for multiple languages in your screen reader. The pages for each language will identify which specific tables to use.

JAWS

To change your braille table, do the following:

  1. Press Ctrl+Insert+B or Insert+V to open the Adjust Braille Options dialog.
  2. Use Alt+O to open the Options menu.
  3. Navigate to the “Braille” settings.
  4. Select “Advanced” and expand the “Translation” level to find “Output Mode” and “Input Mode.”
  5. Change the braille table using the spacebar or arrow keys.
  6. Press Alt+A to apply the changes.

NVDA

To change your braille table, do the following:

  1. Press the NVDA key + N to open the NVDA menu.
  2. Select Preferences > Settings > Braille.
  3. use the tab key to navigate to the Braille Output Table and Braille Input Table combo boxes.
  4. Use the arrow keys to select the desired table.

VoiceOver (Mac OS)

To add braille tables to your Braille Table Rotor, do the following:

  1. Open VoiceOver Utility. The easiest way to do this is by opening Spotlight (Command+Space) and typing “VoiceOver.”
  2. In the “Utility Categories” list, use the Up and Down Arrows to navigate to “Braille.”
  3. Using VO+Left Arrow, navigate past the “Braille Translations” list to the Add button.
  4. Click the button (VO+Space).
  5. Use the Up and Down Arrows to select the desired language.
  6. Press VO+Left Arrow to move to the “Translator” list.
  7. Use Up and Down Arrows to select desired translator table.
  8. Press VO+Left Arrow until you reach the Add button and press VO+Space to add the translator.

The selected table is now in your Braille Table rotor. To switch tables while using your computer, do the following:

  1. Press Shift+Command+Option+Control and the Left or Right Arrow until it announces “Braille Table.”
  2. Use Up and Down Arrows to select the desired table.
  3. Release keys. The menu will disappear and you will now be using the selected table.

VOiceOver (iOS)

To add braille tables to your rotor, do the following:

  1. Launch Settings.
  2. Navigate to Accessibility > VoiceOver > Braille > Braille Tables.
  3. Double tap the “Add Braille Table” button.
  4. Find desired language in the list and double tap.
  5. Find desired table and double tap to select.

The selected table is now in your rotor. To switch tables while using your iOS device, do the following:

  1. In Settings, navigate to Accessibility > VoiceOver > Rotor > Rotor Items.
  2. Make sure that “Braille Table” is selected.
  3. When using your device, move finger and thumb in a clockwise or counter clockwise circle to open rotor.
  4. Continue until it announces “Braille Table.”
  5. Swipe up or down with one finger until the desired table is selected.

You can also switch braille tables while using Braile Screen Input, by designating a the gesture in the BSI settings.

Android OS (Support unknown)
